Roamin’ in the gloamin’

Camusdarach Beach is on the northwest coast of Scotland.  I wanted to see it because it’s one of the beaches featured in the David Puttnam film Local Hero. It’s where Ben’s shack was built against the sand-dunes at the far end of the bay.

It’s a beautiful place in the da time, a few miles north of Arisaig looking out towards the islands of Rhum, Eigg, Muck and Skye.

At sunset, it became a magical place. The light and the colours were unforgettable.

In England and Wales we have sunsets followed by increasing darkness and night. In Scotland they have sunset and then the gloamin’ which can last hours depending on how north you are where the light changes casting everything in spectacularly rosy hues.

Wasn’t that a lovely film? Do you remember the white cottage in the final shots? It was my friend’s, and she didn’t know it was in the film until she saw it at the cinema.

How fab! Local Hero is still one of my top three favourite films – and when I heard David Puttnam talking at Hay Festival, he said it as his all-time favourite film! 🙂

It has that wonderful feelgood factor doesn’t it. and that hint that maybe, if we lived differently, we might live better. And maybe the polar bears would not be melted out of their habitat.

IYes, Isobel. It has a lovely pace to it. But no matter what we do now, the polar bears have had it thanks to China, India and the USA not giving a jot about their carbon emissions. Bah 😦

Sigh! I love that film. Beautiful shots.

  3. Oh, I LOVE Local Hero! And the photographs bear it out: what a stunning sunset! Loved this one, Jan. Now I want to go!

😀 Nice to see similar enthusiasm! I totally recommend Arisaig/Mallaig area. Wonderful deserted beaches, *amazing* locally-caught langoustines, boat trips to the islands…. I mean, who doesn’t need to go and see Muck?

Part II of the Local Hero Tour is to go up to Pennan, which is over on the other coast. One day… one day…. 😉
